Photography notes
What makes a good photograph
- Good subject
- Good lighting
- Good composition
Rule of thirds
- Centre of interest; a photograph should have a strong focal point. Determine what it is before taking a photograph
- Simplicity; keeping compositions simple, avoiding busy background that may distract from the subject
- Subject off centre; place the subject slightly off centre rather than the middle of the photo.
Leading lines
If a scene has strong lines, make sure the lines lead the eye into the frame rather than out of it. The lines should lead to the man points of interest.
Viewpoint/ angles
Shooting at various angles to capture different shots. Move the camera higher or lower than it usually would be. For dramatic effect use a birds-eye or worms-eye view.
Lighting
Dramatic lighting can add interest to a photo. Silhouettes make a subject dark as it photographed against a light background.
Framing
Framing a subject by zooming or moving closer draws attention to it.
Symmetry
An identical or near identical image of its other half. Use of symmetry often provides a formal balance.
